There's nothing wrong with using USB on a backplane or motherboard, and in fact it makes a lot of sense for things like keyboards and mice.

My MacBook Pro's keyboard and touchpad both show up as USB devices. So does the machine's built-in IR receiver (for the little Apple Remote) and the built-in iSight camera.
