I've found that using macros to support specific hardware makes for very convenient, and very reliable, reusable code. It doesn't happen often that I have to use the same hardware except when upgrading the same system, but, once in a while, I have to do something so similar, perhaps only differing in timing or bit rate, that I can reuse it, and I've not, had to regret it.
