sometimes you need precision either just because you need precision or because you are on a tight time budget. Most often a routine giving you the time you want -0 +25% you are fine and in those cases Russ' trick is, indeed, a "waste of space". However I can think of a few cases where the solution proposed by Russ will apply, for instance in cached processors you will not have to take (possible) cache misses into account.
