Yes, I think that the vending machine MDB protocol is unusual in using the 9th bit to also mark the endof a message

Note that MDB sets the 9th bit at the end of a Slave (response) message only - it does not set it at the end of a Master (command) message.

Thus there can be no confusion as to whether it signifies the start or end of an MDB message.
