I've had quite a few problems with Prolific-based devices, so I avoid them (except for low-demand applications) and use FTDI-based devices now.

However, you can try looking at the device details and ensure the driver you have is correct:

In Windows: Device Manager > Properties [right click] > Details tab > Hardware Ids

Then look in the .inf file in your drivers folder and you might see that/those don't match.

That's worth a try.
